Adoption of a Wild Orphaned Ringtailed Lemur Infant by Natal Group Members: Adaptive Explanations

چکیده

In December 1992 an infant ringtailed lemur, approximately 7 weeks of age, was orphaned in one of the regularly-censused social groups at the Beza-Mahafaly Reserve, southwestern Madagascar. The infant was initially adopted by a subadult (2 yr-old) male from the group. Continuous-time focal animal data were collected for a 12-hr period, from the time that the infant was retrieved by the young male, in order to document the adoption process. Ten members of the infant's social group (total group number = 18) engaged in infant care behaviors over the 12-hr period. The subadult male spent the most time engaged in infant care, and he and one adult female exhibited the highest frequency of caregiving behaviors over the 12-hr period (p< 0.001). Four adult males also initially cared for the infant. The orphan was one of only six infants in the reserve population to survive that year. She was censused two years later as an adolescent member of her natal group. Adaptive explanations for this adoption vary depending upon the caregiver. For the subadult male and adult female caregivers, kin selection can be suggested, as the infant was related to all females and immature animals in the group. Adult males may have exhibited caregiving behaviors as a strategy related to affiliation with adult females which could lead to potential mating and reproductive success.

Resource Competition in Wild Populations of Ringtailed Lemurs (lemur Caita ): Implications for Female Dominance Abstract

Michelle L. Sauther Department of Anthropology Washington University St. Louis, MO 63130 U.S.A. Stresses imposed on female lemurs by adapting their reproductive events to seasonal resource availability may be exacerbated by high preand post-natal maternal investment and by group living. Within such a context female dominance can be seen as a critical behavior, enabling females to coexist with m...

A New Interpretation of the Social Organization and Mating System of the Ringtaled Lemur (lemur Caita)

Michelle L. Sauther and Robert W. Sussman Department of Anthropology Washington University St. Louis, MO 63130 U.S.A. Long-term and intensive studies of identified individuals have enabled us to reexamine the social structure and organization of Lemur catta. Ringtailed lemurs have highly overlapping home ranges which vary in size de~endin~ upon season and habitat, and should not be considered s...

Changes in behavior in free-ranging Lemur catta following release in a natural habitat.

The adjustment of captive-reared and developmentally deprived ringtailed lemurs (Lemur catta) to supported release on St. Catherine's Island, Georgia, was studied over 7 years to examine if these animals developed behavior comparable to wild populations. Initial changes after release included decreased obesity and increased agility as well as foraging for appropriate novel plants. Ranging, dail...

The Socioecology of the Ringtailed Lemur: Thirty-Five Years of Research

Like many cercopithecine monkeys, Lemur catta lives in multi-male female resident groups that usually contain 10 to 20 animals.6–8,10 Sex ratios are approximately 1:17,8,10,11 and sexual dimorphism is slight.12 Females usually remain in their natal group, (but see below) whereas males migrate.13–16 Groups are centered around a core of adult females and their offspring.6 As in Old World monkeys,...

Preliminary assessment of natal attraction and infant handling in wild Colobus vellerosus.

This study describes natal attraction and infant handling in wild ursine colobus (Colobus vellerosus). Focal animal samples were collected from five infants of 1-16 weeks of age (mean: 14.5 focal hours per infant). Group members may be attracted to an infant, but unable to handle it because of resistance from the mother. We thus measured natal attraction independently from infant handling by th...
